NHS Pharmacy First

This is a new service which aims to support patients with acute common clinical conditions to receive advice and treatment within a local community pharmacy rather than be referred to another healthcare professional setting.   Pharmacists and their teams are experts in medicines and can help with minor health concerns.

To use this service, you must be registered with a GP practice in Scotland or live in Scotland.  People who do not live in Scotland cannot use this service (even if they are registered with a GP in Scotland).

You do not need an appointment and you can go to any pharmacy in Scotland.  The pharmacist can give you advice for a minor illness and provide medicine if they think you need it.

You can receive advice and treatment for minor illnesses such as;

  • Acne
  • Allergies
  • Athlete’s foot
  • Backache
  • Blocked or runny nose
  • Cold sores
  • Constipation
  • Cough
  • Cystitis (in women)
  • Diarrhoea
  • Earache
  • Eczema
  • Headache
  • Head lice
  • Haemorrhoids (piles)
  • Hay fever
  • Impetigo
  • Indigestion
  • Mouth ulcers
  • Sore throat
  • Pain
  • Period pain
  • Threadworms
  • Thrush
  • Warts
  • Verrucas

A pharmacist will refer you to the GP practice when they feel that is the more appropriate option to take.
